From a WhatsApp desk to an app.

Athena started at the University of Lagos as a WhatsApp desk, helping students turn crypto and gift cards into naira. It grew into Athena Desk and processed billions of naira in trades.

Doing it by hand showed us what people actually needed. Getting paid in crypto was easy. Turning it into money you can spend, send, and send as cash to banks — quickly, at a fair rate, from someone you trust — was not.

So we built Athena into an app that makes crypto work just like money for every Nigerian: Crypto and Cash in one place.
